Level 2

Level 2 builds upon everything that was learned in Level 1 by introducing more advanced techniques that both enhance the professional quality of your instruction and helps to better internalize student learning.  You, as the instructor-student, are provided with more opportunities to explore and practice both the science and art of adult learning.  You are also exposed to the basics of instructional design.

Level 2 Prerequisites:

Level 2 Consists of:

  • Level II Core Course: 40-hour course that includes the 24-hour Intermediate Instructional Skills, 8-hour Presentation Skills, and 8-hour Critical Thinking Skills courses
  • Level II Instructional Technology 16-hour course

POST Plan IV: There is no tuition for the POST IDI program. As a POST Plan IV, student travel and per diem are reimbursable via Training Reimbursement Request (TRR) or Letter of Agreement (LOA). This course is an exemption to the current suspension of reimbursement as outlined in Attachment A of POST Bulletin No. 2017-01. As such, travel reimbursement will continue at this time. TRRs can be obtained through your department. LOAs will be handed out at the end of the course. 


Level II Intermediate Core Course (40-hours)        

This course is designed to offer experienced teachers (with previous instructional skills training) new and enhanced understandings related to the active learner-focused classroom, facilitation skills, presentation skills, critical thinking skills, outcome-based learning, problem-based learning, handouts/job aids, and assessment of learning.  This course is the Level 2 of Instructor Development Institute (IDI) Program.  Additionally, this course meets the training requirement for the POST Academy Instructor Certification triennial re-certification training requirement for law enforcement instructors.

This is a new format for the IDI Level 2 program.  This new format includes: Presentation Skills (8-hours), Critical Thinking (8-hours), and Intermediate Instructional Skills (24-hours).

Presentation Skills (8-hours)  

This course provides intermediate level presentation skills for students who have already completed basic instructional skills training. Additionally, this course meets the training requirement for the POST Academy Instructor Certification triennial re-certification training requirement for law enforcement instructors.

This course is part of the 40-hour Level 2 Core Course.  Please do not register for this course if you have already taken the 40-hour Level 2 Core Course.

Critical Thinking Skills (8-hours) 

This course is designed to offer experienced teachers (with previous instructional skills training) critical thinking concepts, skills, and tools that will develop the policing mind and cause students to evaluate the quality of their own thinking. Additionally, this course meets the training requirement for the POST Academy Instructor Certification triennial re-certification training requirement for law enforcement instructors.

This course is part of the 40-hour Level 2 Core Course.  Please do not register for this course if you have already taken the 40-hour Level 2 Core Course.

Intermediate Core Course (24-hours)

Instructional Technology   

This is a fundamental course that introduces students to several different mediums that can be utilized to enhance student learning and acquire essential skills that can be immediately implemented in the classroom. Students will learn through hands-on experience in a highly active learning environment.

It is required for students who intend to complete the Intermediate Level of IDI. Additionally, this course meets the training requirement for the POST Academy Instructor Certification triennial re-certification training requirement for law enforcement instructors.

Laptops are required for this course.  IPads and tablets of any kind are not acceptable.

Instructional Technology Equivalency

The Instructional Technology class is an “entry level” class that is geared toward familiarizing instructors with the different types of things that they can use in their classroom, and to give them exposure to Word, PowerPoint and MovieMaker.  If you consider yourself technology savvy, you can complete the equivalency essay and submit to Robert Mann via email.
